Chapter 61 - Making Mooncakes (3)

XingXing looked like he had a difficult time parting with the mooncake. His eyes followed the mooncake the entire time as he followed Cheng Huan into the kitchen. While he was walking, he was still saying, “That’s the one that I made.”

“Yes, that’s the one that XingXing made. You can have it when it is done.”

XingXing, after hearing her words, shook his head and said, “That one is for Mommy.”

Cheng Huan looked down at him and felt very touched. She opened up the oven and put the mooncakes inside. She set the time and temperature before she closed the oven door. Leaning down and holding XingXing’s hand, she said, “Okay. Mommy will have the mooncake that XingXing made and XingXing will have the ones that Mommy made.”

The mooncakes needed to be baked for 20 minutes, flipped once after 10 minutes. The freshly baked mooncakes were steamy, with flaky and soft wraps. Juices would leak out of it with just one bite.

XingXing loved it a lot and one wasn’t enough.

“Mom, I want to have another one.”

“You have one already. I don’t think you have room for another one.” The tray in hand, Cheng Huan gestured at him with her chin. “Touch your belly if you don’t believe me.”

XingXing really reached out to touch his belly. His lunch was still in his stomach when he had a pretty sizable mooncake. His belly was rounded.

He patted his own belly and put down his shirt. Looking a bit regretful, he said, “I am full.”

Meat-stuffed mooncakes were best when it was freshly baked; not so much after it had cooled down. Cheng Huan made a total of eight of them. She gave half of them to her neighbor across from her, ate one herself, and put the remaining two in the fridge. They were saved for XingXing for when he wanted more.

The reheated mooncake, as expected, wasn’t as popular as it was previously. XingXing only had half of it. He placed the remaining half back onto the plate, crawled onto the couch and snuggled into Cheng Huan’s arms. “Mommy, how come it’s not tasty anymore?”

“Food is the best right after it is made. It will get worse and worse over time. Just think about having lunch for dinner. Not tasty, right?”

The little kiddo nodded. He had leftovers before. It tasted quite awful.

“Then, Mommy, when are we making mooncakes again?” asked the little kiddo hopefully.

Making mooncakes was fun.

With XingXing in her arms, Cheng Huan switched to a different channel with the remote control. Some mid-autumn show was playing on the TV and a somewhat popular singer was singing on stage.

The moon, in the middle of the sky, was rounded; it’s light was bright. Cheng Huan looked back at him and said, “On the next mid-autumn festival.”

XingXing had no idea when the next mid-autumn festival was. He acknowledged Cheng Huan’s words with his arms around her neck, hoping that the day would arrive soon.

Cheng Huan had to go back to work the next day.

XingXing didn’t have school and her next door neighbor was away for vacation. Cheng Huan didn’t want to leave XingXing home by himself, so she brought him with her to the booth.

This was a national holiday and City C, as a pretty well-known touristy area, had attracted a lot of tourists. Her BBQ booth was also busier than normal.

Cheng Huan’s booth had already expanded to twice its original size. The food at the booth that was originally next to her was never good and their business went further down after Cheng Huan’s arrival. The owner came over and had a fight with Cheng Huan then reported her for adding illegal substances in her food. The FDA came, didn’t find anything wrong with her food, but found meat that had gone bad at the booth next to her.

They were forced to shut down. After they had been shut down for a while, their tables and chairs had been removed and the spot was vacated.

Cheng Huan took the opportunity to rent that location and hired a few more helpers. Now, she has a total of four temporary workers; a team of five including herself.

That was quite sizable for this night market.

There was a lot to take care of at night, so Cheng Huan couldn’t stay with XingXing the entire time. Luckily, XingXing was already used to it and was perfectly happy keeping himself busy.

Sitting at a table by the door, he looked at the moon in the sky and drew it on his paper.

XingXing had gotten much better at drawing recently. He could now draw a pretty rounded moon.

He looked down and started coloring the moon. He was halfway through when his light was blocked by someone.

XingXing looked up disgruntledly. The person there had his back to the light and XingXing couldn’t make out what he looked like, just that he was very tall.

He looked up for quite a while and his neck started to get sore. The man never moved. XingXing pouted and complained to him, “Uncle, you are in my way.”
