The base was very big in size but Tong Xuelu was stopped by the security guard before she could even go inside. “Who are you here for?’
“Hi, I am looking for researcher Wen Rugui. I am his girlfriend.”
The guard’s eyes lit up like two lights with gossip written all over them when he heard that. “Wait here, Comrade. I’ll go place a call right away.”
The guard ran inside his office to place the call as if he had received some sort of stimulant before he ran right back out. “Comrade, your boyfriend said he will be right over.”
Wen Rugui had been down since his return to the base a week ago.
He was disgruntled, but just a little bit unhappy. He really wanted to spend his birthday with Tong Xuelu.
He felt even worse when he saw Zhou Yan finally gotten a day off to go woo his girlfriend.
His plan was to not celebrate his birthday after he had gotten up. He’d just pretend that it wasn’t his birthday at all.
Unfortunately, everybody else remembered it!
Everybody congratulated him on his way to work. The chef at the canteen even gave him an extra steam bun as a birthday gift.
Even his grandfather gave him a call. All in all, he couldn’t even pretend that it wasn’t his birthday.
The person he wanted to hear from the most, however, had yet to call him.
That made him sad.
Right when he was about to give up hope, he received the call from the guard telling him that his girlfriend was waiting for him at the front door!
Wen Rugui was stunned and his heart throbbed.
She was at the base?

Wen Rugui dashed out like a firecracker after hanging up the phone.

Wen Rugui felt that someone had shoved a piece of candy inside his mouth. The piece of candy had dissolved and the sweetness reached his heart all the way from his mouth.
He almost ran into Huang Qimin and another colleague when he was dashing out.
Huang Qimin was startled. He called out from behind Wen Rugui, “Where are you going, Rugui? What’s the rush?”
Wen Rugui kept on running without even turning back.

Only after he had ran out of the front door, heaving, and saw a slender figure standing by the front of the base did his heart finally returned to its rightful position.
It wasn’t a dream. She really was here!
Wen Rugui dashed in front of Tong Xuelu, panting. “You came!”
Tong Xuelu curved her lips. “Yes, I came.”
It was already autumn but Wen Rugui was sweating from his run. “How come you didn’t tell me? I would have picked you up from the station.”
Tong Xuelu pulled her handkerchief out from her bag and handed it over to him. “That wouldn’t be a surprise then.”
Wen Rugui took the handkerchief from her and thought that that was truly a pleasant surprise.
His mood, that had been down for days, had been elevated all the way up instantly. That was so exhilarating.
The guard looked back and forth between the two of them. “This is your girlfriend, Researcher Wen?”
Wen Rugui thrusted his chest out and nodded slightly. “Mmhmm, my girlfriend.”
The security guard, “Your girlfriend is so pretty. You two make a good couple.”
Wen Rugui’s eyes lit up even more. “Thank you.”
Tong Xuelu, standing next to him, almost busted out laughing when she saw how he had thrusted his chest out when he said that.
Noticing that Tong Xuelu was looking at him, Wen Rugui turned toward her, “Shall we head inside?”
Tong Xuelu nodded.
Wen Rugui quickly took the things from her hand.
Tong Xuelu turned and blinked at him. “Thank you. You are so nice to me.”
VOOM.

Wen Rugui’s ears turned red again.

As they walked, Wen Rugui gave Tong Xuelu a tour of the base with his ears still red.
Granted, he could only show her what was the most basic. He couldn’t show her anything secretive nor did she ask.
There were more people around once they have walked inside the main building.
When the others saw a girl next to Wen Rugui, and a pretty one at that, everyone’s gossip blood began to boil.
They all looked at Tong Xuelu and started whispering to each other.
