Chapter 442 - Tong Xuelu lit a candle for him secretly. (5)

As soon as he had finished saying that, he started dashing.

The roads in the rural area were not even and, even while carrying someone in his arms, Wen Rugui was still able to run very fast.

Jackson had no idea what had happened. He just saw Wen Rugui picking up Tong Xuelu all of a sudden and he was dazed. “Comrade Wan, Comrade Tong, what are you doing?”

Right after he said that, Wen Rugui had dashed right past him.

He could hear his words mixed in the wind. “RUN!”

But it was already too late.

The gaggle of geese had already reached Jackson and started pecking at his feet and calves.

One of the geese was very peculiar. It beat its wings, flew up into the air, and aimed right at Jackson’s family jewels.

The pain made Jackson howl and his voice reached all the way up into the sky.

Tong Xuelu shuddered when she heard it.

Members of the Production Team came quickly to chase the geese away but Jackson was still badly wounded.

His skin broke at multiple places on his calves and, worse of all, was……

A woman eavesdropped around the corner and, when she spotted Tong Xuelu and the others, ran up to them and said, “You have nothing to worry about. His family jewels are still intact. Just some lesion. It’s still usable.”

Tong Xuelu, “……”

Wen Rugui, “……”

Everyone, “……”

The woman quickly went to inform the others after she had delivered the message. The entire Production Team learned about Jackson’s family jewel incident shortly.

Tong Xuelu silently lit a candle for him in her mind.

With an incident like that, the group could no longer stay with the Production Team.

The atmosphere was very awkward on their way back.

Jackson, especially, was turning red and white. He used to be very chatty but he kept his head lowered and didn’t talk much on their way back.

He looked very pitiful.

Back at the hotel, the vice director of the Commerce Department said, “Comrade Tong, even though neither one of the two Comrades Jie blamed us for what had happened today but it was our fault for not taking good care of Young Comrade Jie.

“As such, why don’t you make some delicious food for Young Comrade Jie to make up to him? I’ve asked around. He likes sweets. Just make extra of those today. We are counting on you!”

Tong Xuelu did not dislike Jackson. Plus, it was her job to cook. “No problem. I’ll start on that shortly.”

Wen Rugui, standing to one side, his lips turned into a straight line.

After the Vice Director was gone, Tong Xuelu brought Wen Rugui with her to the kitchen. “Oh right, how come you were able to run so fast even with me in your arms?”

Wen Rugui’s look mellowed out when he heard Tong Xuelu’s voice. “I was born very strong.”

Never mind about carrying just one Tong Xuelu. He could carry two of them and that still would not be an issue for him.

Seeing that there was nobody else in the kitchen, Tong Xuelu reached out, pinched him on his arm, and said in a low voice, “Hmm, it sure feels strong.”

FOOM! Wen Rugui’s cheeks turned beet red instantly.

He did not take his arm back. In fact, he wished that she’d pinch him a few more times.

He felt that he had contracted some sort of strange illness. He wanted badly for her to touch him and he wanted to touch her. But he dared not do that.

As anyone could walk inside the kitchen at any given point, Tong Xuelu needed to refrain herself.

She tossed some red beans into the water to be soaked and started working on some fried taro chips.

Fried taro chips is also a well-known Chaoshan dish.

It also uses granulated sugar, but its texture was very different from that of shredded taro.

Wen Rugui helped rinsed the taros. Tong Xuelu cut them into strips and marinated them in some salt for 15 minutes.

After they were done marinating, she added oil to a work and then she fried the taros in the oil for 8 ~ 9 minutes before scooping them up to drain.

She then added granulated sugar and water into a clean wok, brought them to a boil, and cooked them until they were syrupy. When the mixture thickened, she added the fried taros in it and kept on stirring them. They were ready when the outside of the taros began to turn white.

Wen Rugui worked as her assistant. He felt like a dried plum had been shoved into his heart when he watched Tong Xuelu made sweets for other men. The sour-y taste went all the way from his mouth to his heart.

He dared not let that show, though. He worried that Tong Xuelu would be unhappy about that.

Besides, this was her job. He should not feel envious about her work.

It wasn’t that he didn’t understand the reasoning behind it, but that did not make him feel any better.
