“It certainly is.” Lao Liu missed his days when he was in the military a lot so he happily shared his past with them. I stood guard for three months when I first stationed on the island. I was there from night to dawn. It was incredibly beautiful when the sun rise! At dawn, there would be a touch of a light gold color where the ocean and the sky met. The color would then grow darker and darker until the sun was up and made the ocean turn a golden color looking like a pearl rising out of the water.”
Lao Liu couldn’t stop once he started talking about his days in the military. He went from standing guard to digging tunnels; from digging tunnels to growing vegetables. He even talked about how their barracks were blown down by typhoon one year and they had no where to go to hide from the rain. He talked all the way till they have boarded the plane and the flight attendant announced that they were about to take off.
XingXing knew very little about the outside world and he was very indulged in Lao Liu’s stories. Lao Liu, too, was very pleased that he has an audience. He had already told these stories at least twenty times at home and neither his wife nor his son wanted to listen to them anymore.
There was a sense of weightlessness when the plane took off and it was not a pleasant feeling. Sitting in his own seat, XingXing felt so awful that he was about to start crying.
After the plane was steadied and the awful feeling had passed. The little kiddo wiped away his tears, unbuckled his seatbelt, and crawled into Cheng Huan’s arms.
“Mom.” He grumbled. “I don’t want to be a pilot anymore.”
“Okay. We won’t fly planes then. We will do something else.”
“Okay!” said XingXing as he nodded forcefully.
The plane took off at around 6 PM, dinner time. As soon as the plane was steadied, the flight attendant brought over the menus for them.
Cheng Huan had only flown economy class before in her previous life. This, too, was a noble experience to her. Looking at the menu with all the different choices, she had a hard time making up her mind.
“Mommy, we will have this.” XingXing, too, looked at the menu with Cheng Huan. He had only flipped through a few pages before he had made a decision.
He was pointing at a steak. There was a flower made out of a carrot in the picture with the steak and that was why XingXing had picked it.
“Okay. This one then.” Once Cheng Huan had decided on it, she told it to the flight attendant before she turned to Jiang MingYuan and asked, “What are you having?”
“Oh, same as you two,” said Jiang MingYuan nonchalantly, not betraying a lot of emotions on his face.
He had been very quiet this entire time and nobody knew what he was thinking about. Cheng Huan had no idea what was going on. Taking one more look at him, she asked, “What do you want to drink?”
“Water is fine.”
“Okay.” Cheng Huan looked back over to the flight attendant and said, “One more steak and two glasses of water.”
She then turned to XingXing, “What do you want to drink, darling?”
“This one!” XingXing just happened to be perusing the beverage section. He took a quick look and quickly pointed at one of the pictures.
“We will add one coconut juice.”
“Okay,” said the flight attendant with a smile as she wrote it down before she moved onto Lao Liu and his family.
As opposed to the efficient on Cheng Huan’s end, Lao Liu and his family had a lot of disagreement over what to eat.
Lao Liu wanted to have rice and Mrs. Liu wanted steak. One of them said rice was not tasty and the other one said steak was boring. The two of them almost got into a fight over what to eat. Their son looked at them as though he was looking at a drama and ordered a noodle dish. “This one. Three orders. Thank you.”
As soon as he said that, the two bickering persons stopped immediately and both of them turned against the son and shouted at him. Then they proceeded to ordering what they had initially wanted. One rice dish, one steak, and a noodle.
The flight attendant maintained her perfectly professional smile the entire time but let out a sigh of relief when she walked away. Her voice was even more tender when she waited on her next customer.
