Chapter 195 - "These are keys for upstairs... would you like a tour?" (2)

“I’m not being silly.”

Cheng Huan, “……” No need to be that serious either.

She turned around and, facing the outside, waved her hand. “Nevermind that. When are you going back? Bring XingXing with you.”

Jiang MingYuan folded up the towel that he had washed neatly and said to her back, “I’ll wait with you.”

The landlords weren’t too happy that Cheng Huan decided to move out of the blue. Even though they got to keep the deposit, they still asked to come and check out their place. They worried that their apartment had been damaged.

The landlord couple lived a distance away and wouldn’t be there until the afternoon. Cheng Huan’s plan was to have Jiang MingYuan brought XingXing home first and wait here by herself. She even kept a bun specifically to tie herself over.

But, now that Jiang MingYuan was going to stay with her… then a bun wasn’t going to be enough, right?

Luckily, Jiang MingYuan wasn’t that interested in her bun. Looking at his watch, he extended his invitation. “It’s 11:30. Want to go get lunch? I’ve made a reservation at a restaurant not too far away.”

He had already made the reservation so his invitation was none more than a formality. He didn’t give her a chance to turn him down. He gestured a “after you”, called out to XingXing, and got ready to leave.

He had made a reservation at a Szechuan restaurant. It was only about 10 minutes away by car. This restaurant was quite famed in City C and was said to be particularly authentic. It usually has a long line out its door during rush hours.

Cheng Huan loves spicy food and had been wanting to try this place out ever since she had heard about it but had given up every time because of the time she needed to wait in line. This was her first time here.

As usual, there’s a long line outside of the restaurant. Jiang MingYuan, holding XingXing’s hand, walked inside side by side with Cheng Huan. He gave the receptionist his name and a server brought them to a private room.

The few of them were seated. The server left the room and came back with a menu shortly afterward. He handed the menu to Jiang MingYuan whom, in turn, handed it over to Cheng Huan without even flipping through it.

“You decide.”

“Okay.”

Knowing that it’s a Szechuan restaurant told her that the food here would not be mild. Every dish on the menu was labeled with red peppers to convey its level of spiciness. They were all 4 – 5 peppers at a glance. The very few slightly spicy and non-spicy food were stuffed together at the very end of the menu unfairly. The dislike of the owner toward them were obvious.

Keeping in mind that the other two individuals could not eat spicy food, Cheng Huan skipped over the 4-5 pepper spiciness ones with a layer of hot oil on top and only ordered those around the 3-pepper level.

Three peppers were medium spice level; shouldn’t be too difficult to eat. Cheng Huan named out a couple, gave Jiang MingYuan a look, flipped to the very last page and order the non-spicy thousand-year-old egg and tofu and a vegetable stir fry dish.

Then, after a little bit of hesitation, she flipped to the first page and ordered the 5-pepper dish from the top of the recommendation list.

This restaurant made a point to demonstrate their own preference in any possible way. For example, the two non-spicy dishes that were the easiest to make were served after the numb-and-spicy fish.

A layer of red oil floated on top of the spicy fish making it looked very appetizing. XingXing had a couple bites and his tongue went numb. He even said that he felt like there was a fire burning in his belly. He drank some water but that didn’t help alleviate him any. He dared not touch the pretty colored ones anymore and resorted to eating the tofu and vegetables with his dad.

He might be small but he had a big appetite. The dishes at the restaurant weren’t very big and most of the non-spicy food ended up in XingXing’s tummy. It wasn’t like Jiang MingYuan could fight with him so he had no choice but to reach for the other dishes on the table.

He didn’t notice that the one that he reached out to was the spiciest of all. His face turned red visibly as soon as he had the food inside of his mouth. He barely chewed it before he swallowed it. Jiang MingYuan put down his chopsticks and drank an entire glass of water. Sitting there properly, he stopped looking at the food on the table.
