“Daddy.” XingXing asked amidst the nose of the exhaust. “Am I going to turn white after soaking in milk?”
Jiang MingYuan fell silent for a little bit. “…. That Daddy doesn’t know.”
“Why doesn’t Daddy know?” XingXing didn’t understand. In his eyes, his Daddy was omnipotent. How could he not have an answer for such a minor question?
His look was so intense that it looked like he was about to see right through his daddy’s skin and see if he was possessed by some random stranger. Jiang MingYuan was even more speechless under the stare. He put his hand on XingXing’s forehead, rubbed it violently and said, “Because Daddy doesn’t need to make himself prettier by having fair skin.”
“But girls in our class said only boys that with fair skin will be popular.” Resisting the pressure coming from his father, XingXing looked up strongly and asked, “Daddy, am I fair?”

“Daddy, you need to be fair too so Mommy will like you.”

“It’s not strange!” XingXing defended his theory adamantly. Hearing that his daddy didn’t believe him, XingXing hrumphed and ran over to Cheng Huan. He grabbed the corner of her clothes with his milk-soaked hand and tugged at her to back him up. “Mommy, you will only like Daddy if he is fair, right?”

That, unfortunately, did not work with XingXing. Not hearing a response, he repeated his question. He even tugged at her one more time to better get her attention.
Cheng Huan poured the stock that she had prepared earlier into the pot, added the fish bones, turned the heat up to high, and covered up the pot. Then, looking down and into her son’s eyes, she said something unrelated, “Go wash your hands.”
“Oh.” XingXing let go of Cheng Huan’s clothes and that was when he realized that his hand was sticky. Glancing stealthily over at his mother’s clothes that he had dirtied, he stuck his little tongue out and docilely brought the stool with him to wash his hands.
After he had washed his hands, the little kiddo shook his hands, wiped them off on his pants and carried on with the earlier subject. “Does Mommy like Daddy fair?”
Just why hasn’t he forgotten about that yet?!
Distressed, Cheng Huan had no idea what to say to this little kid who was dead set of setting his own mother up.
The little kiddo was adamant about his question. So much that the person on the receiving end could not ignore him. Staring at the lid of the pot, Cheng Huan felt a slight burning sensation on her back from a look.
Cheng Huan finally gave a muddled “Mmhmm” as an answer to her child’s question. She immediately heard a soft and melodious chuckle from behind her in the next second. After hearing the answer that he was waiting for, he finally came over to help out the poor woman in the kitchen.
He walked over, washed out the bowl, set it aside before he pulled off a piece of paper towel to dry XingXing’s hands with. Stroking his little cheek, he said, “Alright, let’s leave Mommy alone so she can finish with the cooking.”
Then he picked the little kiddo up.
XingXing didn’t not mind being carried by his daddy at all. He reached out and put his arms around his neck. There was a smile on his face and even his voice was cheerful. “Daddy, Mommy said she likes you.”
“Mmhmm.”
“I like you too.”
“Mmhmm.”
“Do you like me and Mommy?”
The two had walked out of the kitchen and into the living room. In the noise of the exhaust, Cheng Huan thought she heard a “Mmhmm” that may or may not have been real.
