Chapter 235 - "I am so happy." (2)

There were not a lot of visitors in this area and their path was much smoother. Jiang MingYuan led the way in the front and the three of them arrived at a tomb after a couple of minutes.

The tomb was not a small one, perhaps 20 ~ 30 sm. There was a wall made out of cobblestones surrounding it. Inside of it was a mini version of a traditional two-story building. The tombstone was right at the entrance of this building with Father Jiang’s birth and death date written on it. There was also a picture of Father Jiang embedded in the middle of the tombstone.

There were designated workers responsible for taking care of the tombs but, of course, the paid workers were never that attentive. There were still some weeds around the tomb. In fact, these weeds were so tenacious that they did not give in to the cold winter but continued to grow strongly upward.

Jiang MingYuan walked in front of the tombstone and put down the flowers in his hand before he started clearing the weeds. He then returned to the tombstone and used handkerchief that he had pulled out of his chest to wipe the tombstone down before kneeling down in front of it. “Dad, happy new year.”

He was not a verbose one. He only said a few simple sentences before he reached out and pulled XingXing over.

XingXing knelt next to his father, baffled. He stared at the picture on the tombstone for a while before he finally figured out what was going on. “Daddy, is this Grandpa?”

“That’s right.” Jiang MingYuan stroked him on his head and looked at him tenderly. He had XingXing kowtowed to his grandfather. He said a few more things before he stood up with the child and pulled Cheng Huan over by her hand. He then said to the man in the picture. “Dad, this is my girlfriend and my future wife.”

They were not yet married so Cheng Huan did not need to kneel for Father Jiang. She merely bowed at the tombstone. Jiang MingYuan looked over at her and his eyes were filled with tender smile. When she stood back up, the man had already turned and said to his father, I will bring her back to serve you your daughter-in-law cup of tea after we have gotten married.”

Cheng Huan didn’t want to say anything in front of Father Jiang’s tombstone so she only squeezed his hand stealthily. Jiang MingYuan seemingly didn’t react to that at all except his hand that was holding hers tightened some more.

It was windy and the few of them did not spend too much time at the tomb. They started heading back after they were done talking. The sky was overcast on their way back and many others were burning offerings to their ancestors in front of the tombs. Some were even lighting up firecrackers. XingXing was started by the sudden noises of the firecrackers and buried his face in Jiang MingYuan’s chest, refusing to come down.

When they arrived home, Cheng Huan continued with her preparation of the New Year’s Eve dinner. Jiang MingYuan went to help out and XingXing ran around the house, stopping by the kitchen from time to time for some snacks and went back out to run around.

Starting from 3 in the afternoon, families after families started having their New Year’s Eve dinner. Customarily, families would light up firecrackers before having dinner. For the sake of mountain fire, it was against the law to light firecrackers near the foot of the mountains but, as this was a small place, this rule was not really reinforced strictly and mostly was just a rule on paper. The noises of firecrackers rang nonstop starting the time that dinner had started.

XingXing was afraid at first but got used to them after a while. He even asked excitedly that whether they’d like some themselves.

Jiang MingYuan looked up to him and said, “No, we are too close to the mountains and cannot light them here.”

Their houses sat right in front of the mountain. Weather was dry in the winter time and was easy to cause mountain fire. Jiang MingYuan couldn’t control the actions of others but, at the very minimum, he wouldn’t do that himself.

After he had finished saying that, he placed the shrimp that he had just peeled into a plate and wiped the water off of his face with his arm. The shrimp were air-lifted fresh and was still bouncy when they arrived. They would slip out of one’s hands if one wasn’t being careful when they were peeling and would get water all over themselves.

Jiang MingYuan looked quite disheveled after peeling a plate of shrimp. The chest area of his very well-fitted suit was discolored from being wet. Even his hair got wet and were dripping a little.

He sighed and handed over the plate of shrimp to Cheng Huan. He washed his hands with soap a few times but could still smell the shrimp on them. He said to Cheng Huan, “I’m going to take a shower.”

Cheng Huan waved at him. “You go. And take your son with you.”
