Chapter 236 - "I am so happy." (3)

New Year Eve has the implication of ridding of the old and welcoming the new. Growing up with her grandfather, they would always bathe and change into new clothes on New Year Eve before having New Year Eve dinner. She would be delighted at the thought of new clothes and yummy food when she was a child. She didn’t have to worry about what to eat or wear after she was grown but the habit remained a pleasant memory in her.

Jiang MingYuan didn’t have the habit of bathing before dinner but he didn’t object to it after Cheng Huan had brought it up either. The father and son bathed and changed into their new clothes and Cheng Huan was just finishing up the final dish when the two of them went downstairs.

Placing the dishes onto the dinner table, Cheng Huan reached around to undo her apron. Seeing that, Jiang MingYuan came to help. After the apron had been removed, Cheng Huan had him go and set the table. “Let me to take a shower. We can start eating when I come back.”

“Okay.” The apron draping on his arm, he lowered his head and pecked her on her lips lightly. “We’ll wait for you to come down.”

XingXing looked at them with his eyes widened but didn’t say a word. Cheng Huan, feeling a little embarrassed, pushed him aside, turned and ran up the stairs.

After Cheng Huan had bathed and changed into new clothes, she also applied some light makeup. Looking at the beautiful woman in the mirror, she curved her lips upward and said “Happy New Year” before she turned and walked downstairs charmingly.

She had on a beige jacket and a cropped wide-leg pants of the same color. Her hair cascaded down to the waist, giving her a look of languid charm.

When Cheng Huan walked downstairs, the cousin that she had met before came over again and asked them to join them for New Year Eve dinner. He stayed even though he heard that they had made their own, insisting that more is merrier.

Jiang MingYuan had been trying to decline him nicely but the cousin came up with unlimited number of reasons. He finally left after Jiang MingYuan agreed to go over to his place for meal the next day. After sending the cousin off, Jiang MingYuan sighed and closed the door behind him. Returning back to the house, he put a smile back on and went over to sit by the dinner table.

There were a lot of dishes. Even though each of them was not too big considering there were just the three of them, but it was still way more than what the three of them could finish.

There were cheerful music coming from the television and mood was lively over the dinner table. It had been many years since Jiang MingYuan had such a gathering feel over New Year time. He was emotional and drank a little bit more than he should. He wasn’t drunk but was definitely a little buzzed. He was more talkative than normal and refused to let go of Cheng Huan’s hand. He would call her name out loud once in a while and then smiled at her. His smile itched her heart.

After dinner, Jiang MingYuan pulled out red pocket and gave it to XingXing. “Here. Your red pocket. XingXing has to stay healthy and happy for the year to come as well.”

Considering the limitation of knowledge of his son, Jiang MingYuan put real money in the red envelope. It wasn’t a lot of money; but enough to fool the little kid. XingXing accepted them happily, opened them up and peaked inside. He smiled a big smile and thanked his dad.

Now that Jiang MingYuan had given him his red pocket, Cheng Huan pulled hers out as well. The two had talked about it beforehand and both gave him the same amount. XingXing was delighted once again. Holding the two red envelopes against his chest, XingXing bounced around like a little fool around the house.

Cheng Huan leaned against Jiang MingYuan as they watched their son ran around the house, feeling both contented and peaceful. She was appreciative of her transmigration. It had allowed her to experience an entirely different life.

The man next to her reached his arm around her shoulder. Cheng Huan snuggled up closer to him and didn’t think much of it. A second later, a red envelope was presented to her. The man said to her in a low voice. “Here. This one is for you.”

Cheng Huan chuckled and gave him a look. “Why do I need red envelope?”

Jiang MingYuan put the red envelope in her hand and, holding her from behind, and whispered into her years, “It’s from me. Of course you can have it.”

“You…” Cheng Huan paused but didn’t say anything else. She accepted the red envelope, stood up and walked upstairs. When she returned a little while later, she had a similar-looking red envelope in her hand and she handed it over to Jiang MingYuan. “This one is for you. Be safe and healthy in the next year and earn lots of money.”

“Okay.” Jiang MingYuan took the red envelope and kissed her on her palm. “Make more money to support you.”

“There’s no need. I can support myself,” objected Cheng Huan lightly. She pulled her hand out before she took her jacket off, rolled her sleeves up, and get ready to go do the dishes.

“Let me. You should take a break from working all day long.” Jiang MingYuan put his hand on her and got up to tackle the dishes.

While he was doing dishes in the kitchen, Cheng Huan wiped the table down, washed her hands, then looked for a clean rag to dry the dishes that Jiang MingYuan had done.

The two didn’t say much to each other but they worked very well together. Their occasional exchange of looks was filled with sweetness.

When the last of the bowls was cleaned, Jiang MingYuan dried his hands and hugged the woman from behind her. Sniffling the fragrance from her hair, he whispered to her, “I am so happy.”
