After finishing tangyuan, Cheng Huan went to do dishes. After they had changed and loaded up the New Year gifts into the trunk of the car, they woke XingXing up and went over to say their New Year’s greetings.
Jiang MingYuan had quite a bit of elders in town. Jiang MingYuan had severed his ties with a few of his uncles due to earlier issues and the remaining ones where not too close so they did not need to visit them. The only ones that they needed to visit was big grandpa and a few of his kids.
When they went over there, Dongdong, the parrot was still situated in the hallway. It recognized XingXing this time and said to him when he said him, “Hi there, little handsome boy. You came again.”
XingXing waved at it happily and, holding a box of git with both hands, said to his good friend, “I need to go say New Year greetings to Big Grandpa, I will be back to play with you later.”
“Pat me again.”
“Oh.” XingXing stroked it a couple more times and said, “I really have to go now.”
“Come play, little handsome boy.”

The person and the bird were having communication issues and spent a long time at the door. Finally, another wave of visitors came and finally interrupted the “lovey dovey” between these two.
The visitor was Big Grandpa’s granddaughter. She was in her forties and a professor at a university. It should have been a very respectable profession but, in a family that were all businessmen and women, they tended to judge others by their wealth. Feeling that a college professor would not make that much money, they didn’t care for her much. They either ignore her or talked about how much they had made in a whiney tone.
She didn’t seem to care much about her situation at home. With the others not caring much for her, she rarely tried to get close to them either and was quite happy just being with her family.
Walking inside with her husband and her child and running into them outside, she smiled a little and greeted Jiang MingYuan. “Hi, cousin. Happy New Year.”
“Happy New Year,” replied Jiang MingYuan. He wasn’t close to this cousin nor was there any ill feelings toward her. After he had greeted her, he patted XingXing and had him greet her.
XingXing finally looked away from the parrot and greeted everyone in front of him. With him stroking it, the parrot flew away to mind its own business. XingXing looked up longingly at it before he picked up the gift box once again and followed behind his dad to talk inside and greet the Big Grandpa along with his aunt’s family.
Old grandpa’s room was particularly lively today.
He was old and had high status. He had over ten families of children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren. Not to mention Jiang MingYuan and the like.
The old grandpa was inside the living room right now and when everybody else walked inside, there was a child around 8 – 9 years old kowtowing to him and saying New Year greetings. He helped the child up with a smile and pulled out a red envelope from his chest with his shaking hand. He patted the child on their head and said to study hard.
XingXing’s eyes lit up as soon as he saw the red envelope. After going out with the big sister yesterday for a few hours, the little kiddo was now completely aware of the usefulness of money. He didn’t even need to be told before he pitter pattered up to Big Grandpa, got down on his knees, and wish Big Grandpa a happy new year, healthy, and longevity just like his parents had taught him.
He was so fast that he was already done by the time Cheng Huan and Jiang MingYuan walked up to them, both of them a little speechless by his actions. They exchanged a look with each other before the put down the gifts and said their greetings with forced smiles on them.
Great Grandpa acknowledged them with a smile before pulling out two more red envelopes and handing one over to XingXing and one to Cheng Huan.
“Take it,” whispered Jiang MingYuan into her ears. “Everybody gets one the first time they are there.”
Cheng Huan felt better after hearing what Jiang MingYuan had said. She thanked Big Grandpa and accepted the red envelope.
