Chapter 241 - They were both speechless about XingXing's behavior. (2)

“I haven’t made anything yet,” said Cheng Huan quickly.

She didn’t sleep well last night and didn’t get up much earlier than the other two. She has yet to go into the kitchen.

“I know,” said Jiang MingYuan as he laced her fingers with his. “It is customary here to not let the women do any household chores on the first day of New Year.”

After he had brought her into the dining room, he settled her down in front of the dinner table and smiled, “So I will be cooking.”

Cheng Huan was a little worried, “Do you know how?”

“Should be fine,” said the man as he walked into the kitchen. He even told her specifically to not look.

“Alright,” said Cheng Huan with a smile. That being said, she pulled out her cellphone from her pocket and turned on the camera. She wanted to see what the man was doing from a different angle.

Unfortunately, there was a screen between the kitchen and the dining room. No matter which angles she tried, she could only see the man’s broad shoulder and nothing else.

Cheng Huan tried a few different angles and none of them worked, so she gave up. She pointed the camera at herself and panned out so the back in the kitchen was also in the picture. Looking at the two of them in the same picture, she mumbled to herself, “This doesn’t look half bad?”

She took the picture and recorded the moment.

Having taken a picture stealthily, Cheng Huan put away her cellphone with a guilty conscience. She placed her hands on top of her knees and sat there properly while waited for breakfast.

The man busied himself in the kitchen for quite a while and she could hear the stove being turned on. Not too long after that, she could smell aroma in the air. Cheng Huan sniffed at the sweet aroma and had an idea what he had made.

The aroma didn’t last too long before the stove was turned off and, shortly after that, the man walked out with a bowl in his hand.

It was a bowl of tangyuan (glutinous rice balls).

The tangyuanwere white and round, squeezing next to each other while sitting in the soup. There were a few goji berries scattered inside as decorations. The presentation was very good overall.

“Try some and tell me what you think.” Jiang MingYuan had anticipation as he put the bowl down.

Cheng Huan scooped up a tangyuan under his gaze and bit off half of one. The savory juice leaked out from the inside.

This one had meat stuffing.

The stuffing was very good. It was perfectly savory and neither greasy nor dry. It wasn’t top-notched but definitely up there. Cheng Huan was genuinely surprised after the first bite. Had she not been sitting out there the entire time, she would have thought someone else had helped him out.

Looking at the somewhat intense gaze of the man, she finished the remaining tangyuanbefore she gave him a thumbs up. “Excellent.”

The man let out an obvious sigh of relief and his tensed lips relaxed. He went back into the kitchen and scooped himself a bowl then, sitting back down next to Cheng Huan, said, “I am glad you like them.”

Tangyuan has the symbolic meaning of completeness. It was customary to have that on New Year Day in this region. Back when Father Jiang was around, he would always make this on New Year Day. Unfortunately, his skill was very so-so and the tangyuan were not fully cooked a few times. When that happened, Gu MingLi would refuse to eat them and the father and son would end up splitting up all of them. Many a times, they had to spend the rest of the day digesting them.

After Father Jiang had passed away, the task of making tangyuan fell onto the servants. Nevertheless, the symbolic meaning of completeness was seemingly lost when they were made by someone else. Ever since then, Jiang MingYuan no longer anticipated or had them again.

Jiang MingYuan remembered this again while he was bringing Cheng Huan and XingXing back for the New Year. He had done a lot of research and many trials and errors beforehand and was finally able to get the taste that he was happy about after wasting many ingredients.
