Chapter 246 - [Tsunami in Country I. Jiang family's had of household safety unknown.] (1)

Cheng Huan felt better after hearing that Jiang MingYuan would be home shortly.

She had seen on the news quite often about political upheavals in small counties in the past and worried that the man would be dragged into something like that. She had been worried the last few days and would watch the news whenever she was free. The news stations only had so much to say in a day and when Cheng Huan watched it over 10 times a day, even XingXing could start repeating some of them.

Luckily days like this was about to come to an end.

Cheng Huan went to bed very early tonight. Laying down in bed after she had washed up, she placed her hands over her stomach and contemplated what to make the man after his return so he could regain some of his weight back. She then thought that it was about time to put in the application for XingXing and meet up with the new teacher. She drifted asleep in her thoughts.

She did not sleep well that night as though she has had a nightmare. She could still feel it after she had woken up but she couldn’t not recall any of the details.

She panted as she clutched her own chest. She wiped away her cold sweat that was over her forehead and looked at her cellphone. It was only 3 AM.

Jiang MingYuan should be resting right now so she didn’t want to disturb him. Not being able to fall back asleep, Cheng Huan laid there for a little bit and turned the television on habitually. Nothing was on television at this hour. She sighed, drummed herself on her forehead, and turned the television back off. Laying in bed, she spaced out while staring at the ceiling.

And that was how she spent the rest of her night. Cheng Huan crawled out of bed when it was light out.

She cooked while distracted and looked at the time again.

6 AM. The morning news was on.

It was so early in the morning there was rarely anything new. The news usually rehashed what had already announced the night before. Cheng Huan used the news announcer’s voice as background noise when she continued to prepare breakfast.

“Per report from Island X’s seismic center, at 22 hours local time, which is 3 AM Beijing time, a strong earthquake of magnitude 8.5 occurred in the sea at 56° east longitude and 23° north latitude. The earthquake had triggered a tsunami that had hit multiple islands of Country I and
they had entered a state of emergency. Their embassy and consulate has issued a reminder…”

Cheng Huan did not think much of it when at the beginning of the news until she heard a certain key term. She turned pale right away. The flour sifter fell from her hand and flour came flying. White dots formed on her clothes but she didn’t care about them.

She dashed out of the kitchen, frazzled. News about the tsunami caused by the earthquake was still being played on the television. They were playing a video captured by some eyewitness and waves were rushing ashore. All the trees, furniture, light posts and even houses were washed down by the sea water. The sea water, along with all the trash it had picked up on its way, continued inland. A young man could be seen hanging onto a piece of floating wood and shouted out for help. All of a sudden, he was covered by the wave and disappeared without a trace.

Cheng Huan felt her heart tightened as though she had lost her ability to think. Her limbs were weak and almost unable to prop herself up. She was finally able to recollect herself after a few minutes. She immediately reached for the phone to call Jiang MingYuan.

Her eyes lit up when she heard a “beep” but it was followed by an out-of-service-area message.

The hope that had risen up in her was crushed. Her hands shook and she gritted her teeth but she was unable to stop her tears from rolling down her cheeks. She wiped them away from her cheeks and continued trying to dial Jiang MingYuan’s number.

The tsunami was no small feat and news after news talked about it. Cheng Huan dialed ten plus times to no avail and finally calmed down a little and gave up on her useless effort.

She looked up the number for the consulate in Country I and was finally able to get through to them after a few tries. The capital, where the consulate was located, was spared. Nevertheless, as Country I was a popular tourist location, there were too much that they were still trying to locate and they were shorthanded. They were only able to speak with her quickly, wrote down the information about Jiang MingYuan, comforted her some, and hung up. They reassured her that they would let her know as soon as they had heard anything.
